The Range Rover, Land Rover’s long-awaited latest flagship SUV, has officially debuted.
The reimagined luxury SUV, which will debut in early 2019, is just the sixth new Range Rover ever since model’s introduction in 1970. It debuts with a variety of electrified engines and innovative technologies, and in 2024 it will be available in a pure-electric form.
Unsurprisingly, Land Rover’s designers have resisted the urge to drastically alter the iconic Range Rover appearance in favour of simplifying the style.
Only the updated grille and the new digitized LED headlights seem to distinguish the front end from the previous model, which otherwise has proportions and a look that are comparable. The lowered roof and prominent midsection that were characteristics of the Range Rover’s previous four incarnations are still present in the current vehicle.
However, the rear is accentuated by with a gloss black strip that stretches over the tailgate and has taillights that are “hidden until lit”, which truly distinguishes the new vehicle from the previous Range Rover models.
Other design modifications that might be considered technical advancements include entirely flush window glass and a double-tighter bonnet shut-line than the previous model.
The Range Rover has a new cabin that is more opulent than ever. Land Rover claims to have put a lot of effort into creating the ideal “quiet refuge” with the new vehicle, putting a priority on simple design and premium materials.
There is still the raised driving position, but there are now additional features like a sizable 13.1-inch contoured touchscreen located in the middle of the dashboard, well-manufactured , and wood veneers made using methods from cabinet makers.
Additionally, for the first time on a Range Rover, purchasers may choose between leather upholstery and an environmentally friendly interior that combines recyclable materials, wool, and faux leather.
The 2018 Range Rover is equipped with a Cabin Air Purification Pro system, which prevents harmful microorganisms from entering the vehicle. Other features include software-over-the-air upgrades, Amazon Alexa, and active noise cancellation.
One of the most innovative features is the remote parking system, which enables drivers to maneuver Range Rovers into and out of parking places from up to three metres away using their smartphones. All Range Rovers also include all-wheel steering.
Land Rover will now sell a seven-seat Range Rover despite having previously vowed never to do so in response to consumer demand from abroad.
With a 75mm longer wheelbase, the Range Rover Long Wheelbase can accommodate seven passengers with two additional seats in the trunk or five passengers as usual. Additionally, the two rearmost seats are roomy enough to accommodate people, exactly as the Volvo XC90 and Land Rover Discovery.
The front and rear anti-roll bars are continuously optimised by an electronic active roll control system to reduce roll and promote faster corner reactions. Other features include a new air suspension system that detects potholes on the road in front, torque vectoring and the capacity and grip on twisty roads, and trailer stability control.
It gives the upscale SUV a rather futuristic appearance, in contrast to other Range Rovers that have more elaborate back lights on display. However, the renowned split-opening tailgate of the Range Rover is still there, and customers may choose the “Tailgate Event Suite,” which converts the tailgate into plush seats for two people.
In 2024, a fully electric Range Rover is expected to debut; however, no information on the battery pack or effective distance on a full charge has been made public.
